With maxporter you'll get to export scene data out of 3dsmax into your own file format in no time. It is built in such way that you dont need to touch the 3DSMAX SDK, to export your scene.

Here's a small INSTALL.txt impersonation:

1. Copy maxporter.dlu in 3dsmax's plugins/ folder
2. Copy public .H include files in your VC++ include/ folder. There's no LIB linking required whatsoever. You only need the pure interfaces declared in the header files.
3. Either use the textExporter sample plugin as a starting base or create a new one.
4. maxporter offers you all the data you need. It doesn't export/save anything by itself. You be the judge of whatever happens to the scene data. Implement your own data to your-own-customized-file-format streaming.
5. Put the resulting *.mpp file ( a DLL, really ) next to maxporter.dlu so it can find it and load it. When you reload maxporter's user plugins you'll get to see yours in the listbox. Select it and push the EXPORT button.
6. You be happy now, jes ?.
